defining humble

Humble yourselves before the Lord

10 James 4:10: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you”.

In the world we live in with access to information 24X7, access to “stuff” is easy, you can go get it, you can have it delivered in a day or two or some areas, an hour, we can be anywhere in a few hours, it is hard to be humble. I find it easy to become arrogant about access. Really, even access to God if I am honest. I have access to the Creator of the World, 24X7.

What does it mean to be humble? Humble is defined: reflecting, expressing, or offered in a spirit of deference or submission. The Lord desires my attitude to be one of deference or submission. How can I practice expressing a spirit of deference?

H U M B L E

  • H – Honestly come before the Lord with your thoughts/challenges – ask for forgiveness
  • U – Understand that nothing you have/are is because of what you have done. The Lord gave you your gifts and talents to be used to further His Kingdom and for His glory.
  • M – Mold your life after Christ, scripture reminds us to be Christlike, that is a daily pursuit.
  • B – Believe that the Bible is the source for your everyday living
  • L – Live out your beliefs – your life should reflect what you believe, not just saying it – living it.
  • E – Everyday – Come before the Lord, confess your sins, offer gratitude for the things that He has done in your life, and seek His guidance on your future.

Lord, I pray that you will humble my spirit. Help me to remember that all I have and all I am is because you have given it to me. Let me use what you have given me to further your kingdom. In Jesus name, Amen

  1. Immediate access makes our world smaller & more “me” focused. Leaving the house & standing in front of an ocean, or a mountain or in the middle of a city, I become humbled at God’s work & remember how small I am & my focus shifts away from me. Great post.
