13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
Earlier the week, we discussed being The Salt of the world. In the second part of this passage, Jesus says, we are the light of the world. The Greek word used here is phos. Jesus has declared himself as The Light of the World in John 8:12 and 9:5. So, what does He mean here that we are the light of the world? Let’s look at Proverbs 4:18: “The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday.” As disciples, our light should be like sunlight, shining bright as a Christ-follower for all the world to see. When our light shines before men, we want to bring others to Christ and give all of the glory to The Lord.
How can you shine your light?
I am all about being practical. How do we live this out? As Christians, we have a responsibility to share the good news of Christ with others, that is shining our light! Our lives should reflect that we have a Savior, and we want you to know Him also. As we were raising our children, we followed the mantra, that more lessons were “caught than taught” by how we lived. Let’s live our lives with so much sunlight radiating that others need Sunglasses!
