17 Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning.
The NIV translation is: Every good and perfect gift is from above. John MacArthur, explains, “Two different Greek words for “gift” emphasize the perfection and inclusiveness of God’s graciousness, the first denotes the act of giving and the second is the object given. Everything that is related to divine giving is adequate, complete and beneficial.”
God is often referred to as the “Father of Lights”, The Creator of the lights in heaven. But light is also often perceived as good verses darkness as evil. God can only be good and unchanging. Using the celestrial terminolgy, God does not change or cast a shadow. He is unmoving. This verse reminds us of His character, unchanging, unmovable, unwavering, steady.
More than ever, in this time of uncertainty in our world with our lives and routines completely disrupted, I find security and peace in the promise that God gives good and perfect gifts and is steadfast! Where is your hope?
